He/Him/His

Jonathan Brown is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who completed his undergraduate training at the University of Illinois at Chicago and his graduate training at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. He enjoys working with adolescents and their families, individuals, and couples with conflict and challenging dynamics.

During Jonathan's undergraduate training he worked at the National Runaway Safeline as a crisis liner helping adolescents and their families navigate challenging situations by helping them find short-term solutions and connecting them with resources. He enjoyed collaborating with adolescents and their families so much he decided to pursue an education in Marriage and Family Therapy.

In 2014 Jonathan began his journey as a Marriage and Family Therapist. He completed a two-year practicum at the Family Institute's Bette D. Harris Family and Child Clinic working with families, couples, and individuals. He also provided home-based and school-based therapy in the Evanston community through The Family Institute's Community Program.

Following graduate school Jonathan joined the Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4) and worked with the Cook County Health and Hospital System (CCHHS) to launch the Community Triage Center (CTC) in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. During his first year at the CTC, he provided crisis counseling and support for clients in immediate crisis. During his second year, Jonathan organized and helped establish an outpatient mental health clinic and began providing therapy to clients in the Roseland community. Jonathan then moved to C4's Uptown location and joined the adolescent and child team, where he provided adolescent and family therapy to a wide spectrum of clients. Jonathan also helped run C4's adolescent summer camp programming and provided ongoing crisis support.

After leaving C4 Jonathan returned to The Family Institute at Northwestern University to pursue more opportunities to provide family therapy. He split his time between the Child & Adolescent and Couples service lines. While working at The Family Institute Jonathan provided supervision to graduate students and unlicensed staff members. He has lectured and provided trainings on topics including adolescent self-esteem and trauma.

Jonathan enjoys challenging work, including families that have high conflict, reunification, and families where someone has mental illness or addiction. He also enjoys group work and is a member of the Chicago Center for the Study of Groups and Organizations (CCSGO). Jonathan is interested in philosophy and social justice. He has a minor in gender and women's studies and did undergraduate research in a social psychology lab. When Jonathan is not working, he enjoys music, moderating various social media websites, playing video games, being a beer connoisseur, lifting weights and running, and hanging out with his long-term partner and two cats.

Jonathan's clinical specialties include anxiety, depression, boundaries, developmental and life transitions, addictions and compulsive behavior, grief and loss, relationship dynamics, power, leadership and authority, personality disorders, communication, attachment, screen and video game usage, social media, self-esteem, stress, and trauma. He works with families, couples, and individuals. Jonathan also works collaboratively with external providers, including teachers and school social workers when appropriate. He approaches therapy collaboratively using an integrative approach, and has experience with structural family therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapies. Jonathan is an AAMFT approved supervisor and provides ongoing supervision to unlicensed and associate therapists.

More than anything, Jonathan likes to keep therapy real and down to earth, and appreciates feedback.
